Bryan Smithson Leading the Way For the Bulldogs
Middle Tennessee State transfer leads Asheville in scoring
Jan. 8, 2007
ASHEVILLE, N.C. The talk around UNC Asheville basketball last season was that help
was on the way, a rumor that turned out to be true.
One of the Bulldogs' biggest weaknesses during the 2005-06 season was the lack of a
true point guard who could handle pressure and get the team into its offense.
That problem has been solved with the addition of transfer Bryan Smithson.
A 6-0, 175-pound junior from Kennesaw, Ga., Smithson immediately stepped in as a
starter and became the team's leading scorer.
An aggressive player who likes to take the ball to the hole and can also shoot from the
perimeter, Smithson made his presence felt immediately with a 25-point effort in the
season opener at the Justice Center vs. Montreat.
Through 15 games he is averaging 15.7 points per game, shooting 43.5 percent from
the floor (36 percent on 3-pointers) and 84.6 percent from the foul line.
He has led the team in scoring 11 times through the first 15 games, leads the team in
steals (28) and ranks second in assists (39) and rebounds (3.5 pg).
Smithson has adjusted quickly to running the UNCA offense.
"I'm pretty happy with how my game is going," said Smithson, who transferred from
Middle Tennessee State after starting the majority of his two seasons there.
"He's a really good player, a great athlete who gives us some go-go in the backcourt,"
said UNCA coach Eddie Biedenbach. "That's something we haven't had."
"UNCA is a good situation for me, and I think I can help this team," Smithson said. "I saw
a lot last year sitting out (due to NCAA Transfer rules) and it changed my perspective of
the game.
